In this episode of Pacific Pulse, Clement Paligaru visits villages on the island of Gizo in Solomon Islands' Western Province, which was devastated by an earthquake followed by a tsunami in April 2007. It claimed more than 50 lives as it wiped out 13 villages and left thousands homeless. More than three years later, these heartbroken communities are determined to rebuild their lives. Some have resettled on higher ground, where they fled to when the tsunami wiped out their coastal homes. Others are staying by the sea, working on reconstruction with overseas teams like Emergency Architects Australia, which provides training in how to build earthquake resistant shelters. 140 schools have now been rebuilt across Western Province since the 2007 disaster, focussing on a collaborative approach that's won a World Architecture award as one of the best models for community buildings in the world.
