In this episode of Pacific Pulse, Tania Nugent is in the Cook Islands' capital, Rarotonga, where she meets the woman behind the clothing label TAV, one of the Pacific's most successful fashion exports. Ellena Tavioni talks about her journey to become a fashion designer from a tiny island in the South Pacific, taking Polynesian style to the international market. Her contemporary prints also incorporate traditional motifs to revive local culture, quashed when missionaries destroyed carvings and banned dancing. It's a creative family - Ellena's uncle, Henry Tavioni, is a renowned Cook Islands carver, and transforms Ellena's designs into wood carvings to print all the fabric on site, using traditional Polynesian tapa block printing techniques.
