In this episode of Pacific Pulse, Clement Paligaru visits the third largest reef system in the world, off Fiji's second biggest island, Vanua Levu. After having to travel further and further offshore to fish, at greater expense in time and fuel, but bringing home smaller catches, more than 100 villages in Macuata province were convinced the solution was to stop fishing in the area and create a marine park. It's a locally managed initiative, with villagers working alongside scientists, monitoring marine life and analysing data to see whether fish numbers improve because of the fishing restrictions.
