Iraq suicide bomber kills 49 17/04/2008
22:21:56

A suicide bomber has attacked a funeral in northern Iraq, killing 49 people and wounding 50.

Police say the bomber detonated a suicide vest in a Sunni Arab village near the town of Adhaim in Diyala province.

The funeral had been for two members of a US-backed neighbourhood security unit who were killed recently.

Al Qaeda has vowed to target the neighbourhood units because they work with US forces.

Northern Iraq has seen an upsurge in bombings this week, including one on Tuesday that killed 40 people in the town of Baquba, capital of Diyala.
