Plans to revive a cull of kangaroos in Australia's capital Canberra has again been met with fierce opposition from animal welfare advocates.

"First the cull was called off earlier this year. Now a proposal to move the kangaroos from Defence land in Canberra's north has been scrapped because it's too expensive and the cull is back on. Professor Steve Garlick, from Wildcare New South Wales says he's outraged. 'An argument like this on the basis of cost is completely without foundation.' But the A-C-T Environment Commissioner Maxine Cooper says Defence has waited too long - allowing the animals to cause more damage to threatened grassland. 'So it's not just a matter now of undertaking the cull. It's a matter now of doing any restoration works and rehabilitation works.' Around 400 kangaroos are planned to be darted and then euthanised over the coming weeks."
