The government of Solomon Islands has launched an effort to involve more people in the issue of constitutional reform.

The Sikua led government is the third government to continue the task of reforming the constitution to allow for a state system to be implemented.

Reform Unit director John Tuhaika says the Unit has travelled the country talking to villages and communities in its efforts to ensure there is clear understanding of the system and to understand what the people want out of it.

He says the government's new effort will involve using radio, television and newspaper awareness programs.

"This is a significant step, because the media awareness program is principally to educate the public about the true intentions and aims of the constitutional reform project, and conversely the draft federal constitution which is now in place," he said.

"The media awareness program will make use of all media outlets in the country, to raise the profile of public understanding of the proposed constitutional change in our beloved Solomon Islands.

"On that note, I wish to commend the media awareness program 2008 to the people of Solomon Islands and request that they take serious participation in the process."
