Veteran Cook Islands politician, Norman George, is among three people facing a range of corruption and fraud charges in the Cook Islands High Court.
The trial may last up to four weeks, the longest in the country's history. Details of the charges became known after the judge in the case lifted a blanket suppression order. Cook Islands News journalist, Tara Carr, has told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program, the case is generating intense local interest. "The case, probably one of the biggest cases the Cook Islands wil ever see in the High Court, involves MP Norman George, businessman Christopher Vaile, and former Atiu Island council secretary Charles Koronui," she said. "The case alleges all three of them are involved in obtaining financial benefit from various government contracts, as well obtaining and receiving secret commissions in relation to government transactions." The trial is due to begin on August 21. Produced by Radio Australia and Australia Network |
