One of the key platforms of the Labor Party's election campaign was bringing troops home from southern Iraq.

Now that Kevin Rudd is in power that issue's been on the table in security talks with the US Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns. As the Government assessed Australia's future in Iraq, a group of soldiers landed back in Darwin today from a six-month tour of duty.

A senior American diplomat has sought to dispel doubts about the strength of the US-Australia alliance under a new Labor Government. After meeting senior ministers, including deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Nicholas Burns heaped praise on the week-old government. One point of difference though is the Labor government's plan to withdraw Australian combat troops from Iraq. The US now wants Australia to help Iraq in other ways.

Military commanders urge greater unity in Afghanistan - Audio feature from Connect Asia program 04/12/2007

In Afghanistan, military commanders from Australia and the United States have called for greater cohesion and a unified authority for coalition operations. A former US general says the NATO leadership can't agree on a single military approach in Afghanistan. And the chief of the Australian Defence Force, Angus Houston, says one decision the coalition needs to make is to commit to at least another ten years in Afghanistan.

Opposition calls for troop withdrawal from Iraq - Audio feature from Connect Asia program 19/11/2007

The Labor Party says Australian combat troops should be withdrawn from Iraq so they can serve in Afghanistan. The opposition defence spokesman made the call in a debate with the Defence Minister, as part of the campaign for federal elections taking place this weekend. Defence Minister Brendan Nelson meanwhile says Islamic extremism is the defining issue confronting Australia.
