For centuries, the French convinced the world that their unique combination of soil and climate was vital for the production of high quality wine. Thirty years ago, however, they had a rude awakening when wine-makers from California defeated their French counterparts in a blind tasting. Known as "The Judgement of Paris", the event turned the wine world upside down. Now, the secrets of the chateaux are out and the grape has gone global with countries such as Australia and the US becoming acknowledged producers and Chile, Spain and New Zealand hot on their heels.
