 Bondi Rescue
Bondi Rescue
Bondi Rescue follows the work of the elite lifeguards in charge of safety at the world*s busiest beach. The full-time council lifeguards - the boys in blue - patrol Bondi seven days a week, 365 days a year. They are the unsung heroes of Bondi. Last summer they conducted 2,500 rescues, almost four times as many as the better-known volunteer lifesavers in red and yellow. While the lifeguards and lifesavers often work in tandem, the lifeguards have the ultimate responsibility for looking after the 2.5 million visitors that come to Bondi Beach every year. Bondi Rescue intimately follows the lifeguard*s work this summer. A single lifeguard at Bondi Beach will sometimes save twenty people from drowning in one day. These professional watermen pull swimmers, surfers and fishermen from treacherous seas in a job where minutes, even seconds, matter. A day in the life of the highly trained lifeguards can involve anything from dealing with bag thieves, major first aids, drunken and drug affected people, lost children, punch-ups, spinal injuries, body retrievals and even sharks. The lifeguards are among the best watermen in Australia and include in their ranks Rod Kerr, former world number six surfing champion and current Australian surf swim champion Greg Bishop. They can swim, run, surf and paddle with the best of them. The lifeguards are mostly 'locals' who know the rips, currents and dangers of Bondi better than anyone. They combine *mateship and vigilance* into a unique work culture. Yet it*s not all danger and drama - locals, celebrities and tourists from all over the world cover Bondi*s famous white sands in barely concealed flesh, turning the kilometre stretch into a heaving spectacle. Summer crowds frequently exceed 20,000 people, and vigilantly moving through the seemingly chaotic throng are the supremely fit lifeguards. Bondi Rescue is a dramatic and compelling series about the lives of the professional watermen who risk their lives in the service of others.
