Glaciers galore
Alaska's Juneau Icefield a moving work of art
Shelley's Alaskan cruise ship pulls into the state's capital, Juneau, for a brief sightseeing tour. Juneau, known as the gateway to the glaciers, can be reached only by plane or ship - you can't drive there. Shelley recommends some heli-glacier trekking, which involves being flown to the glaciers by helicopter and then walking across them. The glaciers move about 30 centimetres in winter and up to 1 metre during the summer months. There are about 36 glaciers in the Juneau Icefield. The next stop is the town of Skagway, which boasts a population of 862. That is until the summer tourists arrive swelling the numbers to 7,000. Tourism is the town's only industry, so you can expect to be well looked after if you drop to see the folks in Skagway. |
